How Do I Read a Diagnostic Report?

Note: The Diagnostic Results report represents the data immediately after the diagnostic is completed. It does take into account any work done in Roadmaps after that point.

For dynamic data, view the Skill Progress or Student Progress reports.

The diagnostic report is an overall summary of your students' diagnostic results. It is important to remember that the purpose of the Teach to One diagnostic is solely to set up roadmaps for your students. For this reason, there is no overall score associated with the diagnostic, nor is there any overarching grade level value. What the diagnostic tells us is what skills students have shown they know. So, that is the data you will find in this report.

You can access the diagnostic report by clicking Reports on the top nav, and selecting Diagnostic Results.

When the page loads, you will see in the header there are 2 versions of the report: Overview Report and the By Skill Report

Overview Report

When looking at the Overview Report, the first place you will want to go is into the filter. As you can see below, there are many values on which you can filter. Most teachers will want to look at one class at a time, though some might want to look at all students in a particular grade level, or at a group of students they have created. (See our article on how to create groups for more information.)

Global filters are available on all reports and will stay populated as you jump between reports.

Note that there are 2 defaults that are pre-populated in the filter: the Initial or Grade Change Diagnostic option and the grade level ladders. The oldest Diagnostic information that you will be able to view is the Fall 2022 window. All of these filters can be changed, and if all the students in your class are in the same grade level, you will very likely want to change the ladder to the appropriate grade level. The default will also show all of your students at once, so it will probably make sense to look at one class at a time, especially if your classes are different grade levels.

The Diagnostic Results Overview report!
The first tab, labeled Overall, displays a bar chart indicating how many students placed out of x many skills in the identified ladder. This will be represented as a count of the skills that students placed out of if you have selected the Count filter in the filters section, or as a percentage of all of the skills on the selected Roadmap if you selected the Percentages filter. If you hover your arrow over a bar, a pop-up will show you the count of students for the given range of skills placed out. If you click on a bar, a pop-up will show you who the students are.

The following tabs all display the same kind of information, but filtered by skill strand. The Number Sense tab answers the question: how many Number Sense skills did my students place out of on the selected diagnostic? The following tabs answer the same question but for Algebraic Thinking, Geometry, Functions, or Statistics and Probability skills.

As a final reminder, this data only serves to show a snapshot of the skills that a student has placed out of by taking a diagnostic. It will not update to show skills inferred by passing skill assessments after the diagnostic, and if your students are taking an interim diagnostic, it will not display how many skills the student has completed on their roadmap so far. For information on student performance on assessments other than the diagnostic, check out the other teacher reports, described in detail in the article Access and use teacher reports.

By Skill Report

This report tells you what skills students know and are ready to learn based on the diagnostic. Similar to the overview, the filter is the place to start, though if you have already done filtering on the Overview Report, those filters will remain. Once you've prepared the filter set, you can start to make sense of the report.

The report lists all skills. Those skills can be sorted by Strand or Grade Level or can be left in alphabetical order. They can also be sorted by either of the metrics discussed below:

The Diagnostic Results by Skill report!

The Ready For column shows how many students placed out of all of the prerequisite skills on the selected diagnostic and are (or were, at the time of the selected diagnostic) in a good position to learn the identified skills.

The Placed Out column shows how many students have shown on the diagnostic that they know the identified skill.

In either column, you can click on the number and see who the students are, as you can see from the Ready For example below:

The pop-up that displays when you click on the number of students Ready For the Distributive Property skill.

As with the Overview report, you have the option to display this information as either Counts or Percentages. In this report, the Ready For and Placed Out columns will either display the number of students who are Ready For or who have Placed Out of a given skill, or the percentage of students who are in the either category, with the denominator being the number of students who you are currently filtering for.

Note that this report is for the diagnostic only. As students complete skills by taking single-skill assessments within Roadmaps, these values will not update. In order to see those updated values, go to the Skill Progress report.
