How to Assign a Skill to Students

While TTO Roadmaps is designed to recommend skills to individual students that are most useful to them in completing their ladder, there are times when you, as their teacher, want them to work on a particular skill.

Maybe you have a group of students who are ready to learn the same skill. Or maybe you have a really fun, thought-provoking and accessible lesson on a particular skill, and you want the whole class to experience it, regardless of whether or not they are ready and even if they already know it.

For more information on how you can assign a skill to students based on Roadmaps-generated recommendations, check out this article: Navigating the Teacher Homepage. The following instructions focus on how to assign skills of your own choosing.

If you want to assign a skill to a particular student, a group of students or a whole class, follow these directions:

First, choose the appropriate Class, and go to the view where you can see the students. Start by selecting a student you want to assign the skill to by clicking the square in the upper left hand corner of their card. When you do this an orange bar will pop up at the bottom of the screen:

At this point, you can decide if you want to assign the skill to just this student, add more individual students by clicking the squares on their cards, or assign the skill to the whole class by clicking Select all at the bottom. When you have the correct students selected (in this case, the whole class), click on Choose action... then Assign Skill... and then the Go button.

Once this is done, the assign skill box will pop up.

You can search for a skill by title or by ID number. You can also sort by Strand or Grade Level. When you find the skill you want, click Select.  In this case, the skill we'll be assigning is Scale Drawings.

When you click Select, you'll see a new pop up window, showing you information about the assignment. You can see the skill is identified, and you have the option to change it.

There is also a date when you will be asking students to work on that skill. There are various presets you can use, or you can enter the date yourself.

Then you will see students in 3 categories: Ready For, Not Ready and Completed/Placed Out. You can opt to include any of these students in the skill assignment, or you can remove individual students or a whole category by deselecting them. Had you selected only a few students and not the whole class, only those selected students would show in this table.

In this case, there 1 student who does not have this skill in their roadmap, so the skill cannot be assigned to them. This will only happen in some cases where there are students at multiple grade levels within the same class.

When you've got everything set as you like it, click Assign Skill. The skill will be added to students dashboards on the assignment date. Students can also filter for assigned skills in their skills tab.

The assignment will remain in the dashboard until the student completes the skill or you un-assign the skill. You can change skill assignment in the assignments section of your classes tab. Here is an article on how to make changes to a skill assignment: Manage Skill Assignments.
