The Diagnostic Experience

Welcome to Roadmaps! Your personalized learning experience is designed based on the math skills you learn and demonstrate on your diagnostic assessments. There are 3 types of diagnostics that you may take in Roadmaps:

Initial Diagnostic

If you are new to Roadmaps, your first step is to complete your Initial Diagnostic in order to receive your own personalized learning Roadmap. There are 3 parts in this diagnostic assessment.

  • Before you begin Part 1, you will be directed to watch a short video that provides more information about the format of the diagnostic.
  • As you complete each part of your diagnostic, you will see a Roadmap Progress Map being created on the right side of your homepage, filling in with roads and neighborhoods.
  • Each part must be completed in order, but all 3 parts do not need to be done in one sitting.

Tips for the Initial Diagnostic

  • Find a quiet place where you can concentrate.
  • Have some scrap paper and a pencil available.
  • A calculator is available on the screen for questions where it might be helpful. You do need to have one to take this assessment.
  • You might notice the questions getting harder as you go, that is because the assessment is adaptive, which means if you get a question right, it will ask you a more challenging question.
  • You may see questions with math content that you have not learned yet.  This is an assessment to help us understand what you know and do not know yet, so you should just answer those questions to the best of your ability. Do not stress about getting every question correct.
  • Try to set aside three different times to take this assessment - it is a lot to do at once!
  • If you are planning on completing all parts in one sitting, we recommend that you take a 5-10 minute break in between parts.
  • You cannot go back to previous questions to revise your work, so take your time. It’s not a timed assessment!

After your Initial Diagnostic

When you have completed all 3 parts of your Initial Diagnostic, your Progress Map will show your Roadmap according to the skills you demonstrated successfully. As you continue to learn in Roadmaps, more icons will be added to your Progress Map to reflect the new skills you complete!

Interim Diagnostic

The Interim Diagnostic is usually set up by your school, and is meant for you to demonstrate your progress in Roadmaps since your last diagnostic. It follows a similar format to the Initial Diagnostic, and will update your Progress Map once you finish.

Grade Change Diagnostic

A Grade Change Diagnostic may be assigned to you if you are starting a new school year with Roadmaps, or if you change grade levels during the school year after completing your Initial Diagnostic. Depending on how long it has been since you took an Initial or Interim Diagnostic, you maybe be assigned only Part 3, only Parts 2 and 3, OR Parts 1, 2, and 3 again. The results of your Grade Change Diagnostic will create a new Progress Map for your new grade level.
